2023 was a record year for waste wood processing in the UK according to the latest annual statistics published by the Wood Recyclers Association (WRA).

The WRA statistics show that over 97% of UK waste wood was processed in 2023, the highest level to date. This continues a pattern of year-on-year growth since the market was temporarily disrupted by covid in 2020.

Large-scale biomass continued to be the largest user of waste wood in 2023, accounting for 63% of wood processed which is 2.8 million tonnes.

WRA members accounted for 3.92 million tonnes of waste wood processed – representing approximately 90% of the market. This is up 2.6% from 2022 and reflects the important role that waste wood biomass plays in delivering secure, low carbon, baseload power.

As a WRA member Seras are proud to support the UK’s waste wood market. We process 1.1 million tonnes of waste wood a year, preventing it from being sent to landfill. In addition, we supply 1.7 million tonnes of sustainable biomass fuel to UK power plants every year.
