Investing £3.25 million in Tilbury site improvements

Key investment during 2025 in our Tilbury site has led to improved efficiencies at an operational level across the entire processing operation during 2026.
Seras Tilbury investment

During a temporary shutdown of our Seras Tilbury site in late 2025, our team used the opportunity to invest heavily in our Tilbury site operations and the upgrades included:

  • New shredding equipment
  • New screw conveyor
  • Other parts of the line have been refurbished

All of this means that we shred better material, which gets us a better quality of product going through the process, this leads to:

  • Improved fuel quality
  • Increased reliability
  • Shorter downtime
  • Delivering more fuel

This ultimately provides our power plant customers with a better quality of fuel and improves performance for our power plant customers. This ensures we continue to run our Seras Tilbury operation at optimum efficiency throughout 2026.

Aaron Whitrow, Head of Operations said, “Projects of this size and scale require meticulous planning to get them completed in a short shut down window. It’s great to see what our team can achieve when under pressure and we’re all delighted with this refurbishment. It flowed smoothly and was a great success for all involved. I’m really proud of all that the team have achieved here.”

Seras Tilbury site overview

Since the Tilbury plant was built, Seras has processed over 1.6 million tonnes of grade C waste wood at the site, also removing various ferrous and non-ferrous metals, plastics and light material.

The shredded material is then sent to various power plants across the UK and is used as biomass fuel, keeping our customers well stocked with a reliable fuel supply.

This process helps reduce landfill waste and lowers carbon emissions, contributing to a more sustainable energy solution. Annually Seras keeps over 1.2 million tonnes of waste wood out of landfill.

Hear from our team and suppliers in their own words

During the Seras Tilbury refurbishment we filmed our teams and suppliers talking about the investment and how it has benefitted the operational efficiency of the site and our teams. This work supports all of our key values including Stronger Together, Take Care, Accomplish More and Future Focused.

From our operations team at Tilbury, you can hear from our General Manager, Paul Leslie and our HSQE Business Partner, Rasheed Banire. From our team at Widnes, Head of Operations, Aaron Whitrow and Operations Project Manager, Lawrence Williams talk in depth about the investment.

In the next film, Sebastian Alhauser from HAAS Recycling-Systems comments on the fantastic collaboration between our teams and the success of the project.

Building Partnerships with our key Seras Tilbury project suppliers

Our teams worked closely with our key suppliers for this refurbishment which included HAAS Recycling-Systems, CRJ and Potters Forge.

Big thank you to all of our suppliers who worked so hard on the Tilbury refurbishment project. Our team really appreciated all your support, hard work and collaboration which ensured the project ran smoothly, on time and on budget.

In the film below, Joe Potter, from Potters Forge discusses how everyone involved in the project worked together, which made for great team camaraderie.

Now that the refurbishment work on the site operations is complete the team are looking forward to the business benefitting from the improved efficiencies, whilst planning further improvements to the Tilbury office space. They’re also already planning for the next site shut down later in 2026!
